Inaugural lecture by Joël van der Weele

Research fellow Joël van der Weele (University of Amsterdam) will publicly accept his appointment as Professor of Economic Psychology on Friday May 24, with a joint inaugural lecture entitled: 'Upcycling democracy.'

Inaugural lecture by Joël van der Weele

Can an interaction between economic psychology and critical data studies address these challenges?, This is what professors Stefania Milan and Van der Weele attempt to do in their joint inaugural lecture.

Normally speaking, economic psychology and critical data studies don't have much to do with each other. But it still might be interesting to explore the areas where both of these disciplines intersect. In their joint inaugural lecture, Van der Weele and Milan engage in a dialogue between these fields.

Using insights from their respective disciplines, they analyse the driving forces behind human behaviour and the role of technology in democracy. They connect insights from behavioural economics about the human tendency toward us-versus-them thinking with the introduction of new technologies such as social media and AI. Milan and Van der Weele evaluate challenges such as polarisation and datafication. They also propose ways to involve citizens and scientists more closely in policy-making and to improve the vitality of our democracy.

The ceremony will start promptly at 16:30 in the Aula - Lutherse Kerk of the University of Amsterdam. Find all information about the ceremony on the website of the University of Amsterdam.
